College Application Week will take place October 19 - 30th, 2020. During this week, advisors schools help students submit online applications for admission while some colleges offer application fee waiver opportunities.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

This week, iMECK Academy would like to introduce you to a Fantastic Freshman Naiara Jenkins. Ara is a hard-working student who is compassionate about helping others, animals, and the environment around her.  She always has something positive to share with her peers and shows a genuine curiosity about learning.

Thank you, Ara, for making iMECK Academy your home away from home. We appreciate the time, effort & energy invested in our program. Please text Ms. Bauguss at (704)269-8684 to arrange a pick-up time to claim your prize!

TEACHER SPOTLIGHT

Teaching at iMeck is truly PERSONAL for Mr. Newburn and we are so happy he chose to become apart of the iMeck family.

This week's Teacher of the week is new to the iMeck Family but he is definitely making his stamp as a model teacher. Mr. Norman Newburn is one of iMeck's English teachers. Since joining the staff he has been dedicated to learning about the iMeck student body so that he can customize their learning experience in his classroom.

In his short time here at iMeck Mr. Newburn has already made his stamp, by bringing rich expertise as an ELA Teacher. He has also been very key in helping our student services team when it comes to preparing Senior's life after High School and contributing to the overall culture of the school. He is truly a gem and we are so happy that he calls iMeck home.

For this reason, Mr. Newburn is gaining steam with our iMeck students and staff.

Thank you for your much-needed splash of diversity and thank you for not attempting too hard to assimilate to the culture of the students. They appreciate teachers that are genuine to who they are at heart. These students have existed in a homogeneous world and very much needed to see your faces, experience your norms, and develop relationships with you before they leave the Plaza and Milton Rd. -Mrs. Jackson

Congratulations Kimberly Romero Canales

One of our iMeck Academy Sophomores has been working on a Humanities project over the summer to help bring awareness to the tragedies of human trafficking.  As a Social Studies educator, I am very proud of Kimberly Romero Canales. The team/group that Kimberly is taking part in, not only wants to bring awareness but is also helping to put an end to Human Trafficking.  I inquired and she expressed to me that she would like me to share the link to her design with you all.  Kimberly created the design over the summer and her art is being placed on a T-Shirt.  If you are interested in buying a shirt or just want to see the design, you can click the link below.  All proceeds go directly to the mission.

CTE Completers

Congratulations To iMeck's 2020-2021 CTE Completers. A completer in CTE is a student who has taken all courses within a program of study. This means a student would have to take a sequence of courses within iMecks CTE Business, Marketing, or Graphic Design program of study. These students are now qualified to test for the National Career Readiness Certificate.

The CareerReadinessCertificate (CRC) is based on the WorkKeys System designed by American College Testing (ACT) to help predict job behavior and to measure the full potential of individuals.

Congratulations on this accomplishment!

Driver's Ed

Students can sign up for Drivers Education beginning Monday, August 31, 2020 via Jordan Driving School.

Jordan Driving School, Charlotte teaches Driver Education safety to students who are at least 14 ½ years old, and who are actively enrolled in a public, private, charter, or licensed home school within Mecklenburg County. Students who attend school outside Mecklenburg County are ineligible to take Driver Education through Jordan Driving School Charlotte and will need to contact the closest public school to the school they attend to inquire about the Driver Education program for that county. Residency in Mecklenburg County does not determine Driver Education eligibility; where the student attends school is the determining factor. Jordan Driving School, Charlotte does not teach private lessons or adult students.

Beginning in August all classes are virtual. If you are interested in taking Drivers Ed you can register online. Payment for your classes can be collected at registration or at...

MYEP: Career Readiness Training

Congratulations to the iMeck students who made a great decision to sign up for The Mayor's Youth Employment Program. (MYEP)

By applying for this program students have opted to build their future with a paid work experience. Students will have an opportunity to explore careers, hone skills, and gain exposure to models of professionalism, creating pathways to attainable career goals!

So What's Next?

Student applicants will need to check their personal email addresses and enroll in Linked In Learning. There you will find modules for MYEP. These modules will have to be done by 10/20 to prepare you for the MYEP Career Readiness Training which will qualify you for Summer Employment.

Here is the timeline:

FAFSA is Open

The new 2021–22 FAFSA form is here! Completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is necessary to determine eligibility for state and federal aid to cover college expenses.

Important Notes to Completing the FAFSA

  1. Each student and one parent should apply for a FSA ID at fsaid.ed.gov. Make sure to keep a record of the parent's and student's email addresses, the answers to the security questions, and both FSA IDs in a secure place. You'll need that information to sign the FAFSA.

  2. Complete the 2019-20 FAFSA available at fafsa.gov as soon after October 1 as possible as state grant funds do deplete.

  3. Check the FAFSA submission deadlines for each school to which you apply.

  4. You'll need information from your 2017 tax filing.

  5. After Submitting the FAFSA, you'll receive a Student Aid Report which is necessary to check the status of your FAFSA.

New - The FAFSA is going mobile! For more information, click here!

NC Residency

The NC Residency determines in-state status for NC public colleges. This is required for ALL applications to NC public colleges to be complete and reduces costs by 30-60%.

Please check out Ms. Thomas guide to RDS to simplify the process.
